Is Another 9/11 Attack Around The Corner?!
What a mess our interventionism and internationalism has gotten us in. Al Quada is now said to be stronger than ever, meaning we are losing the "war on terror". The director of our (Soviet style?) Homeland Security department has "a hunch" that we will soon be attacked. The FBI has said that suicide bombings are nearly unavoidable. We just learned on July 9 that about 25% of senior positions in that very department are vacant. We learned this week that a person can make a suitcase dirty bomb from scratch in a matter of weeks. Our southern border is so porous that there are at least 20 million illegal aliens in this country, every one of them possible security threat, and the President says it would be impossible to "round them up". Thousands more come into the country every day. Habeas Corpus has been suspended, and the patriot act threatens basic Constitutional civil liberties. The Taliban is back and their spokesman told ABC News that an attack bigger than 9/11 is imminent. Our President and State Department have been signaling an escalation of tension with Iran and many analysts believe another war is unavoidable. It seems like we send a new carrier group to the gulf every couple of months. Our dollar is weakening by the day, faster than ever right now, and our trade deficit is growing by the minute anyway. We are more and more at the mercy of foreign powers to produce what we consume that I wonder if we could muster the manufacturing capability to prosecute a more widescale war. More of our troops are being killed at a higher rate than ever in Iraq, and there is no peace in that nation or in the region that can even be imagined.
And what is the solution posed by the White House (and by most of the Democratic Leadership, for that matter)? More internationalism and international government, more free trade and economic interdependence, more war, more military spending, more treaties; just more of the same. Things are going from bad to worse and nobody has any new ideas?!
Well, I have a few new ideas which are actually old ideas. How about we return to what made us great, and what kept us safe? How about we frankly mind our own business when it comes to foreign disputes, stand up to the multi-national and global interests, tell the UN to take a hike, and start following an America first foreign policy?
What is it that Bin Laden wants, anyway? Bush says "he hates us for our freedom". But is he attacking all "free nations"? No. Bin Laden has told us publicly what he wants. He wants us out of Saudi Arabia. He wants us out of Israel. And he wants us out of their oil fields. Is that really that complicated?
Washington warned against 'entangling alliances'. But that was in the days when a United States President could advocate American Protectionism and not fear reprisal from multi-national corporations, global interests, and internationalist schemers.
We were once a peaceful nation, trading with the world and protecting our economic interests, non-aligned with foreign powers and not interested in empire building outside our continent. We were neutral in foreign disputes and we were not hated by the rest of the world.
But now we find ourselves policing the world to enforce international law, to make the world 'safe for democracy' (even though our form of government is republican), and perhaps to promote and protect the interests of mega powerful multi-national corporations.
And now, as our civil liberties are fraying, our national resolve weakening, our leader nearing approval ratings that make him an impeachment target, and another mega terrorist attack possibly right around the corner; are we able to take a step back and see how to get out of this mess? Will we have the courage to elect a nationalist to the White House, after 8 consecutive internationalists have taken us down this dark path? Will it be too late before 2008 anyway?
